“Launch a Raven,” SEAL Lieutenant Hunter said to his number two.
They were hunkered down just one klick from Aleppo. The operation wasn’t to mount an attack, but to collect intel, and with luck take a prisoner. Someone they could question about the ISIS deployment in the city. Anything worthwhile they could pass to the rebels, all part of the service, courtesy of Uncle Sam.
Chief Trent took the tiny remote controlled surveillance aircraft out of his pack, started the engine, and threw it into the night sky. It soared away, flying level under the control of the onboard electronics that would keep it in level flight until he directed it to do something different. He played with the remote, and the tiny, dark-painted and almost silent craft hummed toward the city. Five hundred meters out, they found a single sentry, hidden from view inside a ruined shepherd’s hut. They sighted him because the roof was missing, and the lookdown capabilities of the Raven showed him up as a ghostly, green shape.
Hunter was watching the tactical screen, and he nodded in satisfaction. “I’ll take one man and go pick him up. You’re in command, Chief.”
“Aye, aye, Sir. You want to take Livingston? He’s a good man with a knife. In case that guy doesn’t want to give in easily.”
“Good choice. Ira, let’s go.”
Ira Livingston was more than good. Knives of all types were his hobby, and he made them, modified them, and threw them. His proud claim was that a knife was silent, whereas even a Sig Sauer with a suppressor still made a noise. No one argued with him, his body count was testament to the truth of his words. They crept toward the target, and found the hut was little more than a pile of stones. Inside of fifty meters, Hunter singled out the target with the Starlight scope. He put his head close to Livingston and murmured, “You see him.”
“I got him, Boss.”
“Good. Remember, I’d prefer him him alive. Don’t kill him.”
“A gentle tap should do it, then. Leave him to me.”
“I’ll cover you.”
A look of scorn, “Don’t bother, Sir.”
Ten minutes later, it was all over, and they dragged the semi-conscious Arab back toward their position. They almost made it, but the prisoner didn’t get that far. An ISIS sniper was lurking in the darkness. Whether he mistook the man for an enemy, or killed him to keep him quiet, no one would ever know. Things had started to unravel. For Hunter and his men, it wasn’t their first failure, although they got away without loss. Next time, it would be more costly.
